Medicine Wheels

The Medicine Wheel is a circle with 4 lines going from its centre towards the four directions: North, South, East and West. There are Medicine Wheels made with stones placed on the ground in the patterns of the Medicine Wheel. There are also smaller Medicine Wheels made on hoops that can be hanged on walls or worn on clothes like on regalia and as hairpins. The smaller type Medicine Wheels have colored beads on strings going in the four directions. According to Anishinabek (Ojibway) and all Algonquin and Lakota traditions the colors of the directions, North, East, South, West are white, yellow, red and black or blue. From the Algonquin Nations the Cree sometimes have the red and yellow color in opposite places. The four colors of the Dine (Navajo) are different and with respect to the mentioned order they are: black, white, blue or turquoise and yellow. The Medicine Wheel represents all of creation. It represents the universe, it represent life on earth and it represents every part of creation. The circle of the Medicine Wheel represents the circle of life that we are all part of, a circle without a beginning and without an end. The four directions on the Medicine Wheel represent all four parts of creation like the four directions on earth and like the four human races on earth. The four directions on the Medicine Wheel represent all four stages present in creation such as the four seasons, the four stages of human life, infancy, childhood, youth, manhood and old age. The Medicine Wheel gives us the ability to understand our place among all of creation. According to an Anishinabek legend the eagle brought the Medicine Wheel to people from the Creator.
